La Lucia is an upmarket suburb north of Durban between Glenashley and Umhlanga, in KwaZulu-Natal Province. With pristine beaches lapped by the warm India Ocean, as well as a corporate complex accommodating multinationals and large professional firms - La Lucia is a popular haven for holidaymakers and visiting business executives alike. A relaxing retreat for those who prefer a relatively quiet hideaway after revelling in the excitement of its nearby attractions, La Lucia is close to the Sibaya and Suncoast Casino complexes, Gateway Theatre of Shopping and uShaka Marine World. Golfers are spoilt for choice, for there are several excellent courses in the La Lucia vicinity. There is also an excellent choice of B&B and self-catering accommodation, with several top-class and award-winning guesthouses and lodges in La Lucia. Some of them are practically on the beach where one can watch dolphins frolic inshore all year round. For those flying in by light craft or charter, Virginia Airport is "just down the road".
Guests' trip to Durban North :
"We visited KwaZulu Natal and because we were on a business trip, we chose to stay away from the main tourist destinations such as Umhlanga Rocks and Ballito.
We were pleasantly surprised at the numerous accommodation options available in this small Durban suburb. There was far more Bed and breakfast accommodation options than self catering facilities in Durban North and most of these were star graded which left us feeling a little more relaxed when we paid our upfront deposit.
Many of the Durban North Guest Houses, as well as some of the Durban North Self Catering properties were elevated and had pleasant sea views.
We stayed at Braemar Guest House. The Bed and breakfast accommodation was great and Sue was very helpful as our "tour guide"
We could have elected to stay at one of the Glenashley guest houses which is closer to la Lucia and can also extend in some parts to the beachfront.
There's a great shopping centre in La Lucia (La Lucia Mall) including the main KwaZulu Natal Golf Pro Shop.
Durban North proved to be a great springboard for our business opportunities because we had easy access to Umhlanga Rocks Gateway centre, Springfield Park Industrial area and North Coast Road industrial areas.
On our off days we played golf at Durban Country Club and Beachwood Golf club - both were fantastic.
We also visited the Umgeni Bird Park with occasional visits to the Durban Swimming beachfronts.
Accommodation options in Durban North is a bonus, but nothing much else happens except dining out in Some of the Durban North restaurants as well as Glenashley restaurants. I can't remember the name, but there was a lekker Portuguese restaurant in Glenashley (ask your guest house host for more info)
Besides accommodation in Durban North, the night life in Durban North is almost non-existent, except for a few very nice little pubs (or Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga Rocks).......Oh, and The Sharks Board is also worth a visit.
All in all Durban North was a very quiet, clean and tidy suburb, ideal for business accommodation and easy driving access to Durban entertainment facilities.
We checked out the self catering accommodation options in Durban North and would only consider these for extended stays.
Moving on to Champagne Sports Hotel in The Drakensberg...........Can't wait."
